ARTISTIC PREMISE

The residency centers on the proposition that the creation of new music does not conclude with the production of a score, and that interpretation does not begin only when a work is considered complete.

Composition, notation, reading, listening, discussion, experimentation, rehearsal, interpretation, revision, and performance are approached as interconnected dimensions of musical practice. Each contributes distinct forms of knowledge and each can transform the development, meaning, and realization of a work.

For composers, the residency offers a context in which musical materials, structures, concepts, and notational strategies can be examined through direct engagement with performers. Questions of feasibility, articulation, duration, balance, instrumental or vocal technique, timbre, coordination, formal coherence, and interpretative possibility can be addressed while the work remains in development.

For performers and ensembles, the residency provides an opportunity to participate actively in the formation of new works. Their knowledge of instruments, voices, bodies, ensemble relations, rehearsal processes, acoustic conditions, and performance practices becomes integral to the collaborative process. Interpretation is understood not as the reproduction of fixed instructions, but as a form of situated judgment, embodied analysis, and artistic authorship.

The residency does not reduce collaboration to the correction of technical problems or the efficient preparation of a finished product. It creates a discursive and practical environment in which participants can articulate their methodologies, examine their assumptions, negotiate artistic decisions, test propositions, and reflect on the ethical and aesthetic conditions of working together.
